This round porcelain tray was made in China and nicely hand enameled with the Rose Medallion pattern of four panels around a central circle. Two of the panels have tree peonies and a bird and two have Chinese people pictured in their home. Each panel is bordered by a gilt strap with green scrollwork vines, each ending in a butterfly at the center. and "Fu" bats, symbols of happiness, at the other ends. The center includes a tree peony and a bird and is surrounded by lines of iron red and gilt. The color scheme is pastel pink, green, iron red, blue, yellow and touches of black. The rim is also gilded.
This tray has an unglazed bottom that is stamped with an iron red mark, Chinese characters in a square. Since antique Rose Medallion (that is, 100 years old or more) was not stamped with Chinese characters, this tray is considered to be "modern" and was made in the 20th century. The condition is excellent--no chips, cracks or crazing and virtually no wear on the gilt and enamels. The underside of the tray has the usual foot rim rubbing and also has a couple of spots of gilt and enamels. The diameter is 10 inches, the rim stands 3/4 inch high and it weighs about 1 1/2 pounds. This is a lovely addition to your Rose Medallion collection or to add an Asian touch to your home.
