This beautiful vintage mirror was made in the 1930's by B. Attewell & Sons in Southall, a suburb of London. The company produced mirrors under their registered trademark name "Atsonea" and had a reputation for elegant, fine quality products. This round rococo wall mirror is solid wood, carved with scrolls, stems of stylized flowers and fans layered with gesso, painted a lovely cream color and then gilded with a soft matte gold. The mirror itself is heavy, beveled glass, backed with a cream painted circle of wood. There's a round brass hanging ring on the back which shows one of the small touches Attewell used: a small "A" incised into its metal backplate. Even the brass clips that hold the mirror into the frame are composed of a cluster of three tiny balls, rather than the plain metal clips (or worse, plastic) that we usually see. There is a black and gold metal rectangle on the lower back, very 1930's looking, that reads: "ATSONEA Superior Products Reg. Trade Mark Made In England." The Corning Museum of Glass has in their library a catalog of Attewell Atsonea mirrors that's dated 1935, which is about the time this mirror was made. The last photo is a copy of an old Attewell Atsonea advertisement, also from about the same time period.
The mirror is in wonderful condition, with great depth, shine and clarity. There are no cracks or chips and just a bit of fogginess in some areas to make it look vintage. There is one tiny black mark just below the beveling at top center. The frame is in very good condition, no missing pieces or damage. Like most gessoed frames, there are some hairlines from aging but no chipping. The paint is intact and the gilding only slightly worn. Framed, the measurement is 24 inches in diameter, while the mirror itself is 17 3/4 inches across. It weighs a very hefty 10 pounds (no flimsy wall hangers here!) and will definitely be shipped Parcel Select Ground.
This is a handsome eye-catching vintage English mirror. The restrained rococo style works beautifully with both formal and more relaxed settings.
