This hand carved face mask comes from the Ashanti people of Ghana in West Africa. Measuring 12 inches tall and 11 inches wide, the mask has vertical lines carved above and below the open eye slits and geometric carving around the outer edge. Domed in shape and projecting about 4 inches from the wall, it weighs a bit over 1 1/2 pounds. The triangular nose and large open mouth are characteristic of Ghanaian masks used for ceremonies and masquerade performances.
This mask is in fine shape with a good aged patina and just a few minor nicks from use. There's a leather loop on the back for hanging, but as you can see in our photos, it also looks handsome propped alongside other artifacts.
