Jonathan Plant and Adrian Tinsley started the Moorland Pottery in 1987 on Moorland Road in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. After taking over the Chelsea Works there, the two designers began by making modern copies of Staffordshire wares of the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of their specialties was a line of Clarice Cliff-style ceramics. such as this delightful wall mask.

Made of white earthenware and completely hand painted, the blue-eyed strawberry blond young lady wears a flower in her hair, a red earring and a jaunty black hat. The overall effect is Art Deco yet complementary to so many different décors. The mask is marked on the back with a black ink stamp reading: Moorland Staffordshire England.

This mask measures 7 inches cross at it widest and 7 inches top to bottom. The thickness varies from 1/2 to 3/4 inch and the piece weighs about 12 ounces. It's in outstanding condition, with no crazing other than one craze line leading down from the earring; it's hard to see unless it's under magnification, but we mention it for accuracy. There are no cracks or hairlines and one tiny chip along the edge of the opening on the back. There is no hanger on the back, but since its partially open, it rests easily on a nail or screw. It can also be displayed on an easel or shelf. Just the ticket in a grouping or by itself, this vivid wall mask from the '90s makes an eye-catching display.
