This spectacular red clay statue of a Spanish woman in stylized traditional clothing was hand made and hand decorated by Alfaraz Pottery in the 1960's. The young woman with the huge, expressive eyes is wearing a mantilla; it is trimmed with carved designs resembling Spanish tiles, as are her apron, her bodice and the front of her basket. The overall glaze is a speckled, matte, rich loden green, with the carving glazed in glossy umber and gold. Just under 14 inches tall on a base 6 inches in diameter, she weighs 4 pounds 10 ounces.

Miguel Durán-Loriga y Rodrigáñez (1928-1997) was a notable Spanish architect, ceramicist and professor of art pottery. He founded the Cerámica Artística Alfaraz (Alfaraz Pottery) in 1952 in the town of Alcala de Henares, just north of Madrid. The pottery made decorative items with designs that were avant-garde in Spain in the mid-twentieth century. He is considered one of the icons of modern design, having been awarded Spain's National Design Prize twice, in 1971 and 1979.

Alfaraz designs are often said to be inspired by Picasso, but Salvador Dali also had a "thing" about staring eyes (including his own). This beautiful pottery statue is in excellent condition with a few glaze skips at the bottom edge which expose the red clay, but no cracks, chips, hairlines or repairs. It's marked with "ALFARAZ MADE IN SPAIN" stamped into the clay on the bottom and also has the original clear label that states "Hand Made Hand Decorated." There are four round felt pads to protect the surface she's placed on, where she will be the center of attention.

>>>Note--what looks like a chip on the left edge of her mantilla in photograph # 6 is actually a bump of glaze. The white patch on the bottom is a remnant of an old price tag.
