Robert Capriola (1959-) of Chico, California, made his first decoy in 1974, after he began working for hunting guide and full-time carver Bill Pinches. Bill taught him about carving and collecting decoys. Capriola became a nationally recognized carver by 1980, one of the few professional decoys on the west coast. He carved both working decoys and decorative life-size birds like this handsome mallard hen.

This solid wood decoy was specially made for the Ducks Unlimited Lac la Croix Collection. Some of its features include the open bill, red glass eyes and naturally painted plumage with white wingtips. Measuring 18 1/2 inches long, it's about 6 1/2 inches across the breast and 4 3/4 inches high to the top of the head. It weighs a tad over 3 pounds.

Embedded in the bottom of the decoy is the Ducks Unlimited brass medallion, inscribed Special Edition 1992-1993 beneath the outline of a duck's head and numbered 915. Robert Capriola's signature is burned into the wood, as is the Lac La Croix Collection logo. The decoy's in excellent condition; the only flaw we could find is an area on the bottom (pictured) that appears to have absorbed some brown stain or paint from what looks like a knothole on the edge of the decoy. There are no cracks or chips and very little wear to the paint. It's a very desirable and highly collectible decoy.
