Manises Spanish Pottery Wall Plate by Cases Ceramics

This dished wall plate was made by Cases Ceramics in Manises, Valencia, Spain. Founded around 1940 in an abandoned cattle pen by Cayetano Cases and his wife Consuelo Cervera, the small pottery company thrived over the years, helped by their three sons.

At the end of the 1980's, the company was divided among the three sons; the middle son, Enrique Cases Cerveró, became very well known for his ceramics under the name  “Cerámicas Enrique Cases.” This plate was created before that division, stamped into the clay on the underside with a simple ”CASES.” The initials X-D are also stamped into the underside, possibly the artist's initials.

The clay was first coated with an opaque white tin glaze with a matte finish. It was then beautifully hand painted in shades of blue with a traditional, somewhat humorous, scene of a returning hunter whose hound is nipping at his prize.

The plate measures 8 3/4 inches across and is about 1 1/2 inches high. Weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces, it has a pair of holes in the top of the foot rim so it can hang on the wall. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing or wear to the paint. It's a charming display plate for wall or shelf.
