OVERVIEW
- Vintage item
Crafted by hand of glazed terracotta, this large pot vase was made by a craftswoman of the Sasak people on Lombok Island, Indonesia. Women work from home making this pottery without using a potting wheel or any measurements. Using the local clay from the hills above her village with very basic tools, the piece was coiled and pressed into shape. It was then placed in a simple outdoor kiln fired with rice husks and straw, giving the pottery its individual markings from the fire. The effects of placing the pot directly into the fire are most visible on the bottom and also show on the interior with a large blackened area to one side.
Sasak pottery is finally getting the recognition it deserves, but it is also becoming more elaborate and "salable" in the pottery centers of Lombok Island. This pot vase is more traditional in its simplicity. It measures 7 inches tall and about 8 inches wide at the high shoulder, with a circumference of 26 inches. The mouth is 3 1/2 inches across and the base is 5 inches in diameter. It weighs a very sturdy 3 3/4 pounds and is in excellent condition, with a few flakes on the bottom edge. It's a handsome piece that works beautifully with almost any interior décor.
