This handsome 1990's Van Briggle Pottery figure depicts a kneeling Indian maiden, her hair in braids, holding her baby on a cradleboard. The glaze, called Ming Blue, is an overall pale turquoise color with a darker blue overspray glaze that gives it depth.
The etcher on this piece was Hilde Manuszak (the incised initials HVM on the bottom) who worked from 1988 to 2002. Etchers at Van Briggle Pottery worked on the pieces after they were removed from the kiln. They used slip, sponges and tools to clean and finish the design. The bottom is also incised with the Van Briggle AA logo; above the logo are the initials IV, which probably stand for glazer Amber Roach, who did glazing from 1998 through 2000. The name Van Briggle and Colo Spgs are also scribed into the clay.
Standing 8 inches tall, the figure measures 5 1/2 inches from front to back and weighs 1 pound, 13 ounces. In excellent condition, with no damage and virtually no wear, this Van Briggle Pottery maiden is a find for the pottery collector and the admirer of Native American themed art.
