From the workshop of Luis Ricardo López Gómez comes this tall, intricately decorated vase. His beautiful earthenware pieces are sold throughout Latin America and the southwest U.S. from his shop, Alfarería Barlop (Barlop Pottery) in the town of Dolores Hidalgo, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. His advertised motto is " Artesanía en Barro Hecho y Decorado a mano" (Fine Clay Crafts Handmade and Hand Decorated) and this vase lives up to its billing.

It's made of terracotta clay, with a sandy, matte green glaze on the exterior that feels rough to the touch. The interior of the vase has the same color but with a glossy surface. It appears completely sealed with the glaze inside so it will hold fresh flowers.

The designs were done in white, peach, light green and dark green slip--liquid clay--applied in lines, dots and dashes that form stripes, rows, meanders and four large feathers or leaves. The dry bottom is marked "Barlop" in ink with what was probably a rubber stamp.

The vase measures a bit shy of 14 inches tall, about 5 1/2 inches across at the shoulder and tapers to a base 3 1/4 inches in diameter. It weighs 2 pounds, 14 ounces and is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks and virtually no wear. With his modern take on traditional design, the potter has created an elegant vase that harmonizes with many different interiors.
