Girl with Doll Folk Art Painting - Signed and Dated

This charming folk art painting is an original, signed work that echoes artworks by 18th century artists like Joseph Whiting Stock. Done on artist's canvas board, it depicts a young girl wearing a blue dress with puffy sleeves and white, lace-edged pantaloons. She's holding a doll wearing a full length pink dress in her left hand; the doll's carriage is behind her to her right. The young lady is standing on a patterned carpet and the upper right of the painting is decorated with the folds of gold draperies, typical of portraits of that period.

The painting is hand signed on the reverse "Muriel Rahmn {or Rhamm}**, Feb. 12-16, 1962" with the delightful notation "my first painting." It's framed in a 2 inch wide, distressed pine frame with a warm brown finish, very handsome and complementary to the artwork. The framed measurements are 25 1/4 inches by 21 1/4 inches by 1 inch deep. The frame is contemporary with the painting, since the prefix of the phone number of the framer, shown in the stamp on the back of the painting, would have changed from ST to 78 in 1963. It weighs 3 pounds and is in excellent condition, with a wire installed so it's ready to hang. For those who love the look of early Americana, this portrait will be a joy to own.

**We found a Muriel Rahmm in the 1940 census; she was then 25 , having been born in 1915, and lived on Crockett Street in Los Angeles. The frame shop she used was in Sherman Oaks, a neighborhood in LA.
