Wooden dummy boards are a perfect example of trompe l'oeil (French for “deceive the eye”). Flat wooden figures that are sometimes called "silent companions," they are thought to have originated from the Dutch tradition of painting a three dimensional image on a flat surface.

Popular in Europe and colonial America, dummy boards were often figures of children, like this charming hand painted young girl wearing a dark green dress with red and cream stripes with puffed sleeves and a full skirt. Her brown hair is parted in the middle and pulled back in the current fashion; she's cradling her kitten in her arms. The painting was done in the broad strokes of the folk art tradition and is hand signed at the lower right "D. Broder." It was purchased in Wisconsin, home of the fourth largest Amish settlement in America.

This hand cut wooden figure stands 22 inches tall and measures almost 15 inches across the hem of her dress. Made of 3/4 inch thick cedar with the edges painted dark green and a rough, unsanded back, it stands steadily braced by a 6 inch long cedar batten at the base. The piece weighs a couple ounces over 3 pounds and is in excellent condition.

Originally tucked in corners and used in empty fireplaces, dummy boards are delightful and unusual decorations in today's homes.
