This superb solid wood shorebird was hand carved and hand painted by Jack Compton of Mannford, Oklahoma. We have seen some of his shorebirds, ducks and one spear fishing decoy on auctions online; the ones that he dated were in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This dowitcher is definitely one of his best carvings.
The dowitcher is one of many birds that migrate through Northeastern Oklahoma in the early spring. Jack Compton did a marvelous job of making this bird come to life for us. From the expertly modeled head with its tiny glass eyes to the dropped tail, the carving is matched by the excellent painted feathers. The wooden rod anchors the carving to the base of beautiful natural driftwood. It's signed on the bottom, hand carved into the wood "JACK COMPTON MANNFORD, OKLA."
The shorebird stands 9 3/4 inches tall to the top of its head, 11 inches long from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail and it weighs just under one pound. It's in excellent condition, ready to display with pleasure and pride.
