This old, primitive dough bowl was hand carved of piñon pine with the marks of the adze and gouge still evident on the bottom. The inside of the bowl is relatively smooth, making it the perfect surface for the painting. The beautiful artwork depicts an arrangement of a paint-decorated canteen, a silver and turquoise concho bracelet and a superb piece of pueblo pottery (looks like Acoma to us). The painting is signed W. Middagh and dated '86. The artwork is in very good condition, with little wear and fresh colors.

The bowl itself is 21 inches long, 10 3/4 inches in width and 3 1/2 inches high, It weighs about 3 ½ pounds and is in excellent condition, with splits in the wood—which don't affect its sturdiness—and some pencil writing on the bottom (all shown in our photos). There are several knotholes, all firmly in place, and bark beetle scars on the underside. The bowl was found in California and we believe the artist lived there also. We'll provide further information to the buyer.

For those who love primitives and/or Southwest/Native American décor, this is a great find.
