OVERVIEW
- Vintage item
A whimsical, high gloss pottery plate that features a cat and mice theme, this piece was hand made and hand painted by listed ceramic artist Rocky Mann. He's been a professional potter for over 45 years. After getting his Fine Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1971, he apprenticed at a pottery in Denmark, then setting up his first studio in Maine when he returned to the United States. He thinks of his clay forms as his canvases, resulting in painterly pottery. The last picture is a photo of Rocky in his studio gallery.
The well of this plate, edged in black and then green, features a large black cat and two black mice, gazing out a mullioned window, The 2 inch wide black lip is painted with eight green mice with little black eyes, each slightly different since they were hand painted. The well is hand signed in black script "Mann" beneath a mouse's tail. The underside of the plate has a glossy lip in mottled green that surrounds the dry foot. We darkened it to gray in one of our photos so you could see the inscription in the creamy white clay: "Rocky Mann Bar Harbor."
The plate is 11 1/4 inches in diameter and about 5/8 inch high. It weighs 2 pounds and is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips or crazing. It's a great piece for the admirers of art pottery and cats and Rocky Mann.
