This enormous, incredibly heavy piece of driftwood was lined with donkey ear abalone for a rustic yet sophisticated art object. Measuring 16 inches long and 15 inches front to back, it stands 6 inches high at one end and slopes down to 5 inches high at the other. Weighing 8 1/2 pounds, it is in very good vintage condition, with just a single chip in the shell inlay, shown in the center of photograph # 7 (be sure to zoom). In photograph # 9, we pictured a drip of glue on the bottom of the piece that ran through when the shell inlay was glued in place.
The wood was left natural---unvarnished and unstained. The contrast between the dark heartwood and the lighter sapwood is striking. While the wood looks rough, having been scoured by sand and water, it is surprisingly smooth to the touch. It would not be a problem to set on a bare surface, as long as it is not dragged across it. As you can see in our photos, when you turn the piece around to different angles, its amorphous shape gives it a new look every time.
If you have a large table or shelf that needs a spectacular centerpiece, this sculpture wrought by nature + human is perfect.
