This exquisitely formed burnished blackware pot was created and signed by Mata Ortiz, Mexico potter Felipe Andrew. He decorated the pot with geometric designs in the traditional colors of red and green. The pot is 5 inches tall, 5 inches at its widest and stands on a small flat base 1 inch in diameter, with a neck opening the same. Señor Andrew's name is etched on the bottom and it is in pristine condition.
Mata Ortiz is a small village in northern Mexico, very rural but home to extremely skilled potters who produce their wares without benefit of a potter's wheel or kiln. The clay comes from the nearby hills and the pigments from plants and minerals. The works from this village appear in high-end galleries and many museums; the quality and artistry of this piece makes it a star in any collection.
