OVERVIEW

  • Vintage item

This handsome studio pottery vase was hand thrown by Jana Gardiner of Ashford Creek Pottery in Ashford, Washington. Beautifully glazed in a matte black, the vase has a central band of semi-gloss ocean blue, mottled with different shades and with flashes of glowing metallic copper. The pièces de résistance, of course, are the three beautifully freehand-painted orcas---or killer whales---swimming around the center. The form itself is elegant, with the potter's finger marks encircling the belly as part of the design, while the upper and lower black bands are smooth and contrast nicely.

The Ashford Creek Pottery is located on the highway leading to Mount Ranier National Park. Jana Gardiner came to Ashford in 1980 and began making her studio pottery there. She co-owns the Ashford Creek Gallery, where her pottery is displayed.

This hand painted pottery vase stands 9 inches tall with a circumference around the rotund belly of 22 1/2 inches. The mouth measures 3 1/2 inches across, with a base 3 3/8 inches in diameter. It weighs 2 1/4 pounds and is in excellent condition. The interior is fully glazed, so it can hold water for flowers if you wish. It's signed on the bottom with Ms. Gardiner's distinctive "Jana."
