A lovely small boxwood stemmed cup, this piece was hand made on a lathe out of a solid piece of wood. Due to aging, the nice narrow rim has gone a bit out of round. It was made to be purely decorative, as the inside of the cup and is not sealed; just the exterior has been given a clear finish. The wood used is a very handsome color, with excellent grain. There are three knots, one of which at the edge of the base has developed a small age crack. The decorative turnings on the stem, the thin walls of the cup portion and the overall well-balanced design point to a talented woodworker.
This goblet measures 5 inches tall, stands on a 2 1/4 inch base and has a mouth about 2 1/4 inches (slightly oval). The dry bottom has some penciled notations which are not readable. it's missing a small patch of clear finish on one side, but otherwise it's in excellent vintage condition. Small treen items like this one look so good tucked into groupings and work especially well with metalware such as pewter and brass.
