The well-known painted Coimbra pottery is inspired by the designs on the mosaic walls and floors of the Roman ruins named Conimbriga in central Portugal. In the 1960's, Coimbra potters began creating ceramics that reproduce the earlier designs, using ancient tin glaze formulas passed down for a distinctive look that is easily recognizable as Coimbra faience.

There are two beautiful pheasants, one on each side, surrounded by a multitude of flowers and foliage in shades of blue, green, rose pink, yellow and brown. This design is known as faisão rosa (pink pheasant). The top and bottom borders are decorated with dots and wavy lines, trimmed in cobalt. With the immense amount of detail on this vase, it is amazing to think that it was painted by entirely by hand. The hand lettered black marks on the bottom read:

ARTESANATO-LOPES--The name of the family-owned workshop founded in 1985 in Redinha Pombal that made this vase (Artesanato is the Portuguese word for craftsmanship)

HAND-PAINTED

SEC-XVIII Sec is an abbreviation of the Portuguese word século which means century, so this denotes the design is from the 18th century

REDINHA-POMBAL is a parish in the county of Pombal, Diocese of Coimbra, where the vase originates from

PORTUGAL

This artisanal pottery vase stands 9 inches tall, has a 3 inch wide mouth, an 18 inch shoulder circumference and weighs a bit over 2 pounds. It's in very good condition, with interior crazing but none on the exterior. A few tiny spots of cobalt on the rim of the mouth and below the line on the foot are present, due to the hand painting of the designs. The vase is fully glazed on the interior, so fresh flowers can be used in it. This is a one of a kind, individually painted faience vase that lends elegance to every room.

P.S. We've included a photo of the Artesanato Lopes workshop and store.
