This handsome hand made, hand painted pottery duck is from the town of Tonalá in Jalisco, Mexico. It's not marked or stamped "Mexico," as it was not meant to be exported. The potter J. Santana signed it under the tail feathers with his letter S in a circle, one of several marks he used. The metallic, almost iridescent paints used are typical of his work, along with the flor de Tonalá (Tonalá flower) on the wings instead of feathers. The features of the duck, such as eyes, wings and feathers, are molded, not just painted on. It's finished in a glossy glaze that highlights the predominant colors of caramel and cobalt on its pale grey body.

The duck measures about 8 inches long, 7 inches tall to the top of its head and 5 inches front to back at the widest point across its back. It's in excellent condition, with a few tiny bubbles in the clear glaze, but no chips, cracks or crazing. (All white spots are the result of the light reflecting off the high gloss surfaces.)The well-potted body and the intricate painting make this a great catch for a Mexican pottery collector.
