This monumental relief sculpture of a Québécois man was hand carved of white oak by Robert Guay in 1988. A member of the Guay family, internationally famous for their carvings, Robert Guay was working as a sculpteur en bois (wood carver) at the Atelier D'Art (Art Workshop) of master carver Marcel Guay in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada when he carved this piece. A historic village on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, it's a port that is a hub for sailors and fishermen. This carving depicts a bearded captain, contemplatively smoking his pipe and perhaps gazing out from the prow of his boat. The detail is very fine and intricate--his strands of hair and the tobacco in his pipe are beautifully carved and his beard is wonderfully complex. There is even a carved "brass button" on the band of his captain's hat. Measuring 22 inches tall, 17 inches wide at the base and 2 1/2 inches thick, it weighs an impressive 7 pounds, 14 ounces.

The sculpture is signed and dated on the front lower right, carved into the wood: Robert Guay 88. Stamped in black ink on the back is the following:

Atelier D'Art Marcel Guay
Sculpture sur Bois {wood carving}
490 Ave. de Gaspé
St.-Jean-Port-Joli-Quebec, Canada

While this carved sculpture can stand on a flat surface, it does have three holes drilled on the back so it can be hung as a wall plaque. It's in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks; the two small vertical splits in the wood by the carved "88" date on the front bottom right occurred naturally in the wood. The oak has retained its lovely buttery color and the piece displays handsomely. In our photos, white spots are reflections of light on the sheen of the wood and are not actually present.

St.-Jean-Port-Joli was named the world’s “Best Creative Destination” by the International Creative Tourism Network. This sculptured bust is a tour de force that represents the best of their traditional wood carvings. Not only of imposing size but expertly carved, this work of art is an heirloom to treasure.
