This handsome art pottery cylinder vase was hand thrown by well-known potter Sam Machulis. Sam started throwing pots in 1970 at Southern Utah State University, where he graduated in 1973 as a dual art major in Ceramics and Watercolor. He received his M.A. in Ceramics from Central Michigan University in 1982. He's taught art at various levels, currently in Alpena, Michigan, where he also has his studio. His works are currently exhibited at Art in the Loft, part of the Northeast Michigan Center for Fine Arts, Inc. Photograph # 9 shows him at his wheel.

This vase was thrown of reddish brown coarse clay, which can be seen on the base, which is unglazed and signed in script "Machulis" and the date 1990. Standing 8 3/8 inches tall, it has a mouth 4 5/16 inches across, tapering slightly to a base 4 inches in diameter. The glazes are beautiful, speckled and dripped in earth tones on the exterior and a grey beige on the interior. Machulis' finger marks are visible inside and out. The piece weighs 1 pound 13 ounces and is in pristine condition. A very desirable and collectible piece of art pottery by a talented ceramic artist, this vase is a serendipitous find.
