The remembrance of loved ones who have passed away is celebrated on The Day of the Dead (El Dia de Los Muertos), during the time called "All Saints" (Todos Santos), between October 31st and November 2nd. Many crafts and decorations are made, some steeped in dark humor to mock death, such as this skeleton (esqueleto) figure, called a calaca. Hand carved of wood and hand painted, it was given a bloody red grimace along with traditional red paint defining the gouged-out eyes, fingers, toes and ribs. Red circles outlined in black were painted at the shoulder, hip and knee joint spots and the elbows were painted red. Pinned at the shoulders so the arms can move, it stands on its own large, flat feet that were nailed onto the legs.

This 15 inch tall carving is about 4 1/2 inches across the shoulders and weighs 9 ounces. It's in good vintage condition; there are no broken bits, the arms are movable and there are no cracks. It stands sturdily without leaning, so does not need a stand. It's a wonderful addition to your folk art collection and has the presence to stand alone, too.
