This handsome wood sculpture is a California quail, nicely carved and mounted on a manzanita burl base. It's a male, life-sized and so very lifelike. His plumage is beautifully hand painted, with mottled grey, white and chestnut brown feathers forming the characteristic patterns of stripes and flecks. His black face is bordered with white stripes, giving him a dramatic mask that frames his short, pointed beak and glass eyes. He has a comma-shaped topknot of black feathers projecting forward from his forehead.
The carver's name is M. Michael, signed in black on the bottom, along with the date of '90. We have not identified this carver, but he or she is obviously talented. The bird on its 5 inch long base stands about 9 inches tall; the quail himself is 7 inches tall and 11 inches long from topknot to tail. He weighs a bit over a pound and is in excellent condition, with very few tiny signs of use and age. This is an expertly carved and painted piece that stands on its own and looks great in a grouping.
