This gorgeous art pottery vase was wheel thrown by Bill Nagengast of Apple Lane Pottery Studio in New Hudson, Michigan in November, 1981. Made of grey porcelain clay from Ann Arbor, Michigan, it was glazed and decorated with colored liquid clays (slips) that were developed by Bill and applied with brushes and cut-patterned sponges. The curvy upper portion of the vase is striped and dripped in blue/black. The lower part, flaring gently like bell-bottoms, has an explosion of floating flowers, a great mod look against vertical panels of white, blue and green, giving a different appearance each time the vase is turned.

Bill Nagengast started Apple Lane Pottery 1973 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in a 1910 sheep barn on an apple orchard. After a fire destroyed the barn, Bill moved to a studio in New Hudson, Michigan in 1976, where he made this piece. After a second fire, he relocated to Anderson, Indiana in 1985, and "semi-retired" from pottery in 1986, making some pieces for family, friends and charitable donations once or twice a year.

This beauty weighs just under 2 1/2 pounds. It stands 8 3/4 inches tall, has a 3 1/2 inch wide mouth and a 4 1/4 inch diameter base. It's in excellent condition with no discernible flaws or wear (the white spots are light reflections---there are no chips). The dry bottom was hand signed in brown slip "Apple Lane Nagengast 11/81." It's a wonderful studio pottery piece from a talented studio potter.
