This large master salad bowl is made of Platonite, a semi-opaque white glass treated with fired-on colors. Hazel Atlas Glass, headquartered in West Virginia, patented the Platonite process in 1936. This design line is named Orchard Ware (obviously explained by the apple shape) and is a gorgeous deep pink, the name of which we've been unable to locate. In fact, there doesn't seem to be an abundance of pieces in this color. It is so vibrant it makes a wonderful display item and mixes well with most of the the other Platonite colors.
This salad bowl measures 11 inches from the top of the stem to the bottom edge. It's 10 1/4 inches wide at the widest point, 3 1/4 inches tall and weighs over 3 pounds. The condition is excellent, with two utensil marks on the inner bottom of the apple and some vague dark spotting on the exterior in some areas. It's a beautiful piece of Mid-Mod kitchenware.
