Ceramiche Bizzirri was founded by Fernando Bizzirri in 1954 in the town of Città di Castello in central Italy. The company has collaborated on their ceramics with artist/potter Heather McCartney and designer Ralph Lauren, among others. The surface of this pedestal bowl is their Pompeii style, with the look of ancient, excavated artifacts. This technique, with what appears to be patches of the white glaze worn by time, creates areas that expose the dark brown clay beneath. It's marked on the bottom, stamped in black: BIZZIRRI, MADE IN ITALY, HAND-WASH RECOMMENDED.
The overall height of this stylish, elegant piece is 8 1/2 inches to the top of the bowl, which is 16 inches long, 11 inches front to back and 3 1/2 inches deep. The measurements really don't indicate how large this is in appearance. It weighs a surprising 8 pounds, 10 ounces and is in excellent condition. There is no post-production damage and it display beautifully, with or without a filler like our potpourri. It's truly a fine example of 'ars figulina'---the Italian art of clay.
