This pretty blue and white earthenware plate depicts the ancestral home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our 32nd president, in Hyde Park, New York. It's "Old English Staffordshire Ware," the trade name used by Jonroth, importers into the U.S. of historical and souvenir designs on Stoke-on-Trent pottery. Many famous potters have supplied Jonroth, including William Adams and Alfred Meakin. The printed blue backstamp on this example is their classic JONROTH ENGLAND MADE IN STAFFORDSHIRE logo with the JR initials topped by a crown.
This 9 1/2 inch diameter plate has the border named "Wide 8 Blossom Floral" on the 1 3/4 inch wide lip. The well has a blue transfer print on pure white pottery of the Springwood Estate. where FDR was born, lived all his life and is buried. The plate's about 1 inch high, weighs 1 pound 6 ounces and is in outstanding condition, with no cracks, chips or crazing. It's a lovely piece to add to a blue and white and/or historical china collection.
