This is a large, original watercolor painting by a listed artist, Marjorie Tolkin Nichols (American, born 1912 ). Depicting a lone quail perched on a branch of a Joshua tree, this art work is elegant in its simplicity and could be termed "modern Southwest." Measuring 17 inches by 22 inches framed, with a sight size of 9 1/2 inches by 14 inches, the work is surrounded by a 3 inch wide pale beige single cut mat and a weathered grey color wooden frame 1/2 inch wide on the face and almost 2 inches high. It weighs 4 pounds 10 ounces and has a hanging wire installed on the reverse. All is in excellent condition, including the glare-free glass, with a few punctures in the dust paper (as found). Her painted, printed signature, vertical as was her custom and with the M circled, is in the upper right of the painting and is shown in photograph #3.

Marjorie Nichols was a student of the famous American artist Dale Nichols (1904 - 1995) and became his fourth wife. It's theorized that they met in Tubac, Arizona, where Dale Nichols had begun an art school, restoring some of the old buildings and painting in the quiet desert town that is now known as an artists' colony. They left in 1949, traveling to Guatemala; Marjorie returned to Tubac in 1959 and managed a gallery there in one of the old buildings her husband had renovated. In 1964 she held a national art show in Tubac and continued to paint; we believe this watercolor was done during that time period. We have not yet found any further information on Marjorie after the 1960's; Dale died in Arizona in 1989,

This is handsome work of art by a talented artist.
