Catherine Greenaway (1846 – 1901) was an English Victorian artist and writer, famous for her children's book illustrations. This charming hand tinted print was included in the book entitled "Little Ann and Other Poems," written by Jane and Ann Taylor and published by George Routledge & Sons in London. Kate Greenaway illustrated the book with her winsome late Victorian pictures. The first edition is undated, but generally regarded as having been printed circa 1880.
The pretty print here portrays a mother and her children. Daughter has discarded her doll on the floor and, we believe, mother is letting her know that baby cannot be treated the same way as the doll. As admirers of early furniture, we love the high-backed Windsor chair and the tripod candle stand, as well as the woven basket. The sight size of the print is 4 inches by 5 inches; it's surrounded by a 1/4 inch wide gilded inner frame (or fillet). The 1 1/4 inch wide frame, which measures 7 1/2 by 8 1/4 inches, is honey maple, with the face veneered in birdseye maple. It's 3/4 inch deep and weighs about 1 pound. There is a sawtooth hanger on the back and an old strip of paper fastened beneath it that reads "1st edition Kate Greenaway print published circa 1880" in black typewrite font. The frame is definitely not as old as the print, but suits it perfectly. Print, frame and glass are all in excellent condition and will please the Kate Greenaway collector and make a wonderful gift for a new mother.
