This historical blue and white Staffordshire plate was produced by the firm of Josiah Wedgwood in Etruria, England circa 1899. The plate has a central scene of George Washington's Headquarter's in Newburgh, N.Y., surrounded by flowers and foliage. The description on the back, printed in blue, reads:

"WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS 1750-Newburgh, N.Y.-1899

Occupied by him from April 4, 1782 to Aug 18, 1783."

There is an impressed WEDGWOOD mark {the letters of which have serifs, denoting pre-1929}, along with an impressed three letter code. The third letter is B which stands for 1899. The next maker's mark is printed in blue: WEDGWOOD ETRURIA ENGLAND. The circular printed blue mark lower right is that of Jones, McDuffie & Stratton, a Boston wholesales that imported hundreds of items that Wedgwood produced for them. The first item they imported from Wedgwood was a calendar tile in 1881. They began to produce historical plates in 1899; this is one of the first of 35 scenes made. JMS sent the required artwork to Wedgwood, where it was engraved on copper plates (which have since been destroyed}. Wedgwood then made transfers from engraved plates and manufactured the china. After the wares were shipped back to Boston, they retailed for 50 cents a plate, later reduced to 35 cents each {!}.

This 9 inch diameter historical china plate is in terrific condition, with no chips, no cracks and no crazing and just a few minute scratches in the clear top glaze. The color is strong and vibrant and the white clay body unstained. This is a wonderful plate to add to a collection---or to start one.
