This is an original lithograph of a watercolor painting by the late Anne Worsham Richardson (1919-2012). A South Carolina native, Ms. Richardson created a wildlife sanctuary on James Island, where she observed the birds she so beautifully painted, becoming the official painter of the SC state bird, among many other honors and awards. She founded the Birds I View Gallery on Church Street in Charleston, where this print was originally purchased, and ran the gallery for forty years. Her works have been exhibited at New York’s Kennedy Galleries, the California State Museum, the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, and a watercolor of hers is in the permanent collection of Charleston's Gibbes Museum of Art. She was the first female painter of birds to receive the “Art Print of the Year” award by the National Wildlife Federation. The print they selected was this one of a California quail perched on a rock outcropping, accompanied by buttercup flowers and foliage; it was published in the National Wildlife Magazine in the fall 1970 issue.

On the reverse of the print is the gold foil label from Ms. Richardson's gallery, along with her photo and an extensive printed biography. What makes this print even more special is her personalized gift message to her friends, signed and dated 1980. The frame is wood, two inches wide with a medium brown finish highlighted with a subtle antique gold. The mat is triple cut: the outer one in cream, then pale green and ending in pale blue on the innermost, all with gilt edges. The overall measurements are 14 1/8 inches by 17 1/8 inches by 1 inch, while the print size is 8 inches by 10 1/2 inches. Print, mats and glass are in excellent condition; the frame has a few tiny dents in the wood but displays beautifully. The piece weighs a bit over 3 pounds and has a hanging wire already installed. It's a lovely artwork by a talented, famous artist.
