This speckled blue pottery candle holder is from the town of Geithoorn in the Netherlands. It was hand made by Rhoda Pottery, founded over thirty years ago by Rudolf and Thea van Eeden-van Delden. Their pottery is a household name, with their specialty color called Geiters* blue. This candle lantern is a pretty and useful example of their blue pottery.
Standing 5 3/4 inches tall on a 3 1/4 inch diameter base, the lantern has an opening in front for the candle that is 2 1/2 inches wide and about 3 1/2 inches in height. We have a tealight candle in it for the photos but a votive candle could be used, also. It weighs just 12 ounces, so it can easily be hung as a lantern with the loop on top. The circular rim is flat under the loop, so it can sit against a wall. There are decorative piercings on each side and on the top, as well as a small "chimney." These allow light to flicker through, as you can see from our photos, as well as disperse the heat from the flame.
The original foil label is intact on one side; the word RHODA is surrounded by pottenbakkerij Geithoorn, which is Dutch for "pottery from Geithoorn." The candle holder is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. It's a beautiful ceramic piece to give as a gift--to yourself or someone dear.
*A geiter in the Dutch language is a goat. We cannot explain the connection; perhaps it's an inside joke.
