This charming stool is made of oak. The oval top is painted with a folky pastoral scene of a thatched roof cottage, an apple tree, a lake in the background and apples and daisies in the foreground. Everything is out of scale which adds to the folk art quality. We believe the stool to be mid-twentieth century.
This stool has four slightly canted, nicely turned legs which are attached with the mortise and tenon method, using no nails or screws. They are very sturdy and firmly attached to the top. The legs are 8 ½ inches long; the top measures 13 inches by 9 inches by ¾ inch thick. Condition is excellent, with a small amount of paint loss at the front edge of the top.
What an appealing addition to any country home!
