This is a pretty matching pitcher and bowl set from Tonalá in Mexico. The white clay pottery was given a speckled pale blue glaze and each piece was decorated with a bluebird on a leafy branch, done in shades of blue with touches of brown, black and white. The rim of the bowl was given a wide band of blue, while the pitcher has the blue band on the rim, the handle and near the base.
The bowl is about 7 inches across the top and 2 1/2 inches high. The base is 3 1/4 inches in diameter and is signed in black "Mex." The pitcher, which fits nicely in the bowl, is about 6 1/2 inches tall, about 4 1/2 inches across the belly and has a 2 inch mouth. Its base is signed Mex also. Other than a few manufacturing flaws like a piece of sand in the glaze of the bowl and a small U-shaped groove in the clay near the base of the pitcher, both pieces are in excellent condition. As is often the case the clear overglaze is crazed.
The colors and decorations of these Mexican folk art pottery pieces are very colorful and cheery.
