This is a beautifully rustic set of three early Mexican pottery nesting enchilada dishes. The rectangular dishes were handmade from red clay in Tlaquepaque in the state of Jalisco. Each graduated tray was hand painted with a different design on the front edge, the largest outer dish with the most complex decorations, since it is the "show" dish. That one has side handles painted a pale yellow, while the others have painted-on faux handles. Each has a crimped pie-crust rim daubed with cream colored paint. The interiors and the sides were given a clear glaze, with the bottoms having just casual swipes of clear glaze. The glaze used at that time contained lead, so these dishes are for display and decoration only.

These nesting dishes date from the 1950's. There are no signatures or markings. The measurements are:

Small: 9 inches by 5 inches by 1 1/2 inches
Medium: 10 inches by 7 inches by 1 3/4 inches
Large: 12 inches by 8 inches by 2 1/2 inches

They're in absolutely great condition, with--miraculously--no chips, no cracks, no paint loss, no discolorations, and are definitely a matched set.
