This Mexican red clay bowl is from the famous workshop of the Castillo family, located in the ceramics town of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla. It was painted freehand with a pair of quince (membrillo in Spanish) as the central motif, with their green leaves in the background surrounded by squiggles and curlicues. The edges were given varying lengths of brushstrokes that formed dripped stripes. The colors are earthy and easy to live with; the overall color is a muted gray-green. The marks in black script on the back include CASTILLO, HECHO A MANO (made by hand) and HECHO EN MEXICO (made in Mexico).

This oval bowl is 9 3/4 inches long and 7 5/8 inches at its widest. It stands 2 inches tall on its unglazed foot rim. Very sturdy and weighing over 1 1/2 pounds, it is in great condition and looks as good with American folk pottery as it does with that of Mexico.
