This pretty dish was made in the 1930's by Noritake, as evidenced by the green printed backstamp: a letter "M" surrounded by a wreath, crowned by "Noritake" in capitals and below " Hand painted" and "Made in Japan" also in capitals.

Noritake porcelain marks number in the hundreds; this one is one of the three most frequently used ones. The M in the wreath stands for the Morimura Brothers. They formed the company that was the precursor of Nippon Toki Kabushiki Kaisha, Ltd., which was officially renamed Noritake in 1981. Since the dish is marked "Made in Japan," it dates from 1921, when the U.S. required Japan to stop using the word "Nippon" to indicate the country of origin and begin using the word "Japan."

The hand painted Tree in the Meadow pattern shows a lone tree by a pond with an orange sunset sky in the background. The dish is about 7 inches across and has three pierced handles. Many of these triangle dishes have gilt trim (which is often very worn) but this one is trimmed in brown which has survived very well. The overall condition is excellent and the dish looks lovely wherever it's placed.
