This lovely small vase has a distinctly Asian flair, with its pale blue glazed pottery body painted with stylized lavender iris flowers both front and back. The circular shape was given indented panels that make it four-sided and a mouth almost as wide as the body, handy for holding brushes or pens and pencils as well as flowers. The throwing ridges from the potter's hands are evident on the interior while the exterior is beautifully smooth and fits in the hand so nicely. The hazy quality of the painting is almost Impressionist (and not easy to photograph).
This vase stands 5 inches tall and is about 3 inches on each side, with a 2 1/4 inch wide mouth. The incised marks on the dry bottom read mk and Hp, arranged so one is upside down from the other; the makers are unknown to us. The high gloss glaze is inside and out, so fresh flowers are definitely an option. It's in excellent condition, actually appearing almost new except for the slight "shelf dirt" on the bottom. It's truly lovely for a desk or worktable, works well with Asian decor and would make a pretty gift.
