This oil painting depicts one of the cobbled streets of Montmartre, looking toward the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart), one of the most iconic monuments in Paris. Painted on canvas, the street is filled with strolling people, their clothing bright against the dark walls of the buildings. The spires and domes of the basilica tower over the scene, forming a backdrop against the pale golden sky. The impressionist painting is textured with layers of impasto and signed lower left by the artist, P.G. Tiele. We've read that he was an Italian who tended to paint street scenes in France and Italy, although we've seen landscapes and seascapes by him, also. We feel that this work was done in the 1960's. The antiqued gold painted frame with cove molding has carved leaf corner ornaments and is both heavy and well-made.
The painting itself measures 8 inches by 10 inches; the framed size is 14 1/4 inches by 16 1/2 inches. It weighs about three pounds and is in excellent condition. There are only a few shallow nicks to the wooden frame, a small area where the red base coat is showing and some foxing on the back of the canvas betraying its age. There is a wire installed on the back for ready hanging. This is an elegant painting that's easy to enjoy and decorate with.
